Standing Against Book Bans: Practical Resources
“Since 2020, millions of students have lost access to thousands of books. Teachers and librarians face jail and death threats, yet only 8% of Americans think book bans are "good." This is about a small percentage making decisions for a majority who either don't agree or even know it's happening. It's costing schools and libraries millions in staff review time, litigation, and needless responding to the endless barrage.
What's also not working is social media campaigns: We are easily beaten when loud folks show up in person. My kids' district wasted $15k hiring charlatan anti-CRT consultants, against some parent’s wishes and most parent’s knowledge, at the behest of a new school Board which recently is heavily represented by one specific local church. Again, they won because they showed up and got the votes.
Let's get our heads out of the sand. Talk to your neighbors, monitor school boards and local elections. PAY ATTENTION. Even if you agree with some measures, a small group with big opinions shouldn't have the power to dehumanize and criminalize larger populations.” - Moni Barrette, Creators Assemble Co-Founder
